Carl Wilkens: I'm Not Leaving

Elkins Auditorium
Thursday, March 13, 2014, 7 – 8pm

Come hear Carl Wilkens' inspiring story about his experiences in Rwanda, being the only American who chose to remain in the country through the 1994 genocide.

“As a humanitarian aid worker, Carl Wilkens moved his young family to Rwanda in the spring of 1990. When the genocide was launched in April 1994, Carl refused to leave, even when urged to do so by close friends, his church and the United States government. Thousands of expatriates evacuated and the United Nations pulled out most of its troops. Carl was the only American to remain in the country. Venturing out each day into streets crackling with mortars and gunfire, he worked his way through roadblocks of angry, bloodstained soldiers and civilians armed with machetes and assault rifles in order to bring food, water and medicine to groups of orphans trapped around the city. His actions saved the lives of hundreds.”

Transforming the Conversation:Convo

Elkins
Tuesday, March 25, 2014, 8 – 9:30pm

So much of the conversation between the gay and Christian communities has become tense, angry, and unhelpful in addressing the real spiritual needs of people on both sides. How can we show more love to one another without compromising our theological convictions on sexual morality? Is it possible to love someone without agreeing with them? What would that look like on this issue? This two-night event is designed to explore the questions, and the disagreement, within a loving, Biblical framework that puts Christ first and foremost.

Two unique presentations will be co-led by Ron Belgau and Justin Lee, two Christians with differing views on the issue but a shared commitment to Christ, the Bible, and the need for compassion.

Overflow seating will be provided in PLC 125 on both Monday and Tuesday evening. Seating is limited. Staff, faculty, alumni, and graduate students will receive reserved seating in Elkins by registering here by 5 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 21. All guests who do not meet the registration deadline may wait in line with Seaver undergraduates, all of whom will be seated on a first-come, first-served basis as space allows. For a full description of the event, please visit the Office of the Chaplain web site.

NOTE: THIS EVENT IS 90 MINUTES LONG
