The leadership development industry is thriving. It is estimated that organizations spent nearly $31 billion on leadership development programs in 2016 alone. Despite continued industry growth and a strong cultural emphasis on leadership, there are still doubts that the industry is delivering. Executives across industries are expressing concerns about the future and their ability to find leaders who can handle the complex environment their businesses now operate in. Many practitioners have responded with new ideas about how to create the true development required for effective modern leadership. Unfortunately, many of these interventions face significant challenges of relevance and sustainability. This session will introduce the concept of vertical development as a tool for meaningful leadership development, and explore methods organizations can use to create and sustain vertical development interventions. Participants will learn key characteristics of successful vertical development interventions, and specific recommendations to design these interventions in their organization or practice.
