The Kinsey Collection
Payson Library Gallery
September 3 – September 27, 2013

Opening Reception:  Tuesday, September 3, 4 pm.

The Kinsey Collection: Shared Treasures of Bernard and Shirley Kinsey – Where Art and History Intersect, is a national touring exhibit of authentic and rare artifacts, art, books, documents and manuscripts that tell the often untold story of African American achievement and contribution.

Dean of Libraries Mark Roosa says of The Kinsey Collection:  “Bernard and Shirley Kinsey’s passion for African American history, art and culture has resulted in a stunning collection of African American art, documents and artifacts, spanning 400 years of history.   Their marriage of more than four decades has blessed us with many gifts, and the teaching and learning that will come from The Kinsey Collection exhibition at Payson Library will benefit not only Pepperdine students, but the surrounding community.”

With education as a goal, The Kinsey Collection has been on national tour since 2007, and has been seen by over 3 million visitors.  The collection has exhibited at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, the California African American Museum, The DuSable Museum of African American History, and many other museums.  The collection has been cited in three national awards including the President’s National Award for Museum and Library Services.  The Kinsey Collection program book serves as a companion to the exhibit and has been adopted by the Florida Department of Education to teach African American history to students in grades K-12 statewide.

A portion of The Kinsey Collection will be on display in the American Pavilion of Epcot Center at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, opening in late winter, 2013.

The Collection will be on display during Payson Library hours from September 3 – September 27, 2013.  There is no admission charge, and the public is welcome.
